Top CDs of 2007

It’s been a pretty good year for new music. On the indie front, Elliott Smith’s second posthumous release, New Moon, was this editor/publisher’s favorite.

Alternative staples such as the Beastie Boys and Radiohead made terrific contributions, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s Baby 81 served as a great windows-down, volume-up summer soundtrack. Spoon proved themselves to be gaining talent with age, and Of Montreal grew a Pageant-sized audience with their latest.

Fun psychedelic throwback bands like Animal Collective got our attention, as well as instrumental bands like Explosions in the Sky. And although it feels like forever ago since it came out at the beginning of the year, The Shins’ Wincing the Night Away locked them solidly in the god-slot. Bands like The Battles and Tomahawk got lots of noteworthy praise from NT writers and critics across the board, too.
