Are you a do-it-yourself kind of person? Have you ever wanted to start your own band and not have to sell out to the ever-present, omnipotent “man?” Well then get ready to take some notes from the musical do it yourselfers, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, a group of versatile musicians who convey a unique sound, all the while staying true to their genre. Their album ClapYourHandsSayYeah [self-released] has the feel of a melancholy understanding --without a defeatist attitude. You’ll see it expressed in riddled phrases like “Run, I’ll do no walking, haunted by a past I just can’t see anymore…” The lyrics are propelled by chords and rhythms best described as a rehabbed retro-rock revival that is just so freeing to move with. This CD is definitely excellent representation of independent rock: created and distributed by a few guys with a great ideas and the initiative to make their move.

The men behind this music are Alec Ounsworth, guitar and vocals, Tyler Sargent, bass and backing vocals, Robbie Guertin, guitar, keyboard and backing, Lee Sargent, guitar, keyboard and backing vocals, and Sean Greenhalgh, drums and percussion. These artists are becoming more and more popular, as evident in the fact their shows are almost all sold-out. Make sure you get to see them whenever they come to a venue near you. If you can’t find their CD anywhere or just don’t know how to use an Internet search engine, then turn on T.V. and/or your radio (NPR covered them recently). With all the hard work these musical entrepreneurs have put in, combined with the publicity they’re getting, they might just make it past the next craze to a band that proves to be long-lasting.
